Two days of hands-on training in how to look after a chainsaw and cut timber to length safely. You learn the safety features and legal basics, how to keep the saw in good working order, and how to cross-cut logs in a range of positions, with an instructor beside you throughout.

There are two routes. The 2-day course with integrated assessment is for occasional users. Professional chainsaw operators take the Lantra Awards route, which adds an independent assessment.

Who it's for

  • Landowners, smallholders and estate workers who use a chainsaw occasionally, for example to cut firewood or clear fallen timber
  • Anyone new to chainsaws who wants to start with safe habits
  • People using a chainsaw for straightforward, ground-based tasks rather than as a professional operator. If chainsaw work is your job, see the Lantra Awards route below

What You Will Learn

  • Chainsaw types, safety features and the law
  • Assessing the risks of the job and the area around you
  • Choosing and using the right protective equipment
  • Maintaining the chain, guide bar, sprocket and chain brake
  • Safe fuelling, starting and care after use
  • Cross-cutting logs on supported and unsupported timber
  • Moving and stacking timber and clearing the work site
  • Preparing the saw for transport and storage
