Noticed this today whilst carrying out a survey. Its a good example of a retained 'snag' ('monolith' to the old skool arborist; 'stump' to the public) with added veterinisation (man-made grooves cut down the stem with a chainsaw to simulate natural failure and stimulate decay). If the whole tree cannot be safely retained this is a great way create a deadwood habitat that can benefit wildlife long after the canopy is removed.
